What is a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are a category of advanced skin care treatments that help address sun damage and turn the dial back on facial skin. There are various types and strengths of peels and the depth of the peel depends on the chemical used.

Chemical peels can be performed on all parts of the body: face, neck, chest, back, arms, and legs. You may require more than one peel to achieve your required results. Our skin naturally regenerates and older, dead cells flake off. A chemical peel merely catalyzes this process by loosening the top layer of the skin removing the upper layers of dead and damaged skin and revealing the new, fresh skin underneath. In addition, chemical peels can also spur the generation of collagen in deeper layers of the skin.

Chemical Peels Consultation

What’s the first step?

The first step to getting a Chemical Peel at Raj Dedhia MD Facial Plastic Surgery is to schedule an in-person visit with one of our compassionate providers. During the consultation, you will have the opportunity to discuss your medical history, aesthetic goals, concerns, and expectations for the procedure. Your provider will then evaluate your skin condition, and the target areas of concern.

At the end of the consultation, your provider will come up with a mutually agreed-upon treatment plan. You can then share the plan with our patient coordinator who can help you schedule your Chemical Peel immediately following your consultation or, if you prefer, at a later time convenient for you.

What to Expect on the Day of a Chemical Peel

On the day of your Chemical Peel, your provider and our friendly staff will welcome you. We will go over the plan to make sure there aren’t any questions and/or concerns.

We will then make you comfortable in the treatment room, first cleaning the target area before the treatment. Depending on the level of the peel, you’ll be given a topical anesthetic to ease the process should there be any discomfort. We will then apply the chemical solution to the areas being treated. This solution is then wiped off and a neutralizing solution is applied to stop the chemical reaction if indicated.

The treatment could take anywhere from fifteen minutes to a few hours depending on the size of the treatment area and the strength and depth of your Chemical Peel. You will be provided aftercare instructions after your treatment.

Chemical Peel Recovery

We encourage patients to stay out of the sun after a chemical peel and generally take it easy the day of the treatment as it is common to see mild swelling and reddening of the target area. After about twenty-four hours, a crust or scab can form, do NOT pick at it!

Instead, apply all the creams, moisturizers, and ointments given to you by your provider. You are also allowed to gently wash your face with soap and water. Let the crust fall naturally within a few days. Your face will initially look sunburnt but then gradually lighten into a pinkish hue, getting lighter and returning close to normal after one to several weeks when your skin has completely regenerated (depending on the type and depth of chemical peel).

You will also want to avoid sunlight as best as possible for the first three weeks as your pigmentation will have been stripped away during the treatment. Once your pigmentation returns, we strongly encourage you to wear good sunblock. After this three-week mark, you can wear light makeup again but probably it is better to avoid it for a few more weeks to not irritate your skin.

Please follow the post-treatment care instructions to get the best results and if anything feels out of the ordinary, please contact us immediately.
