What to expect on the day of Buccal Fat Pad Removal surgery
On the day of your surgery, Dr. Dedhia and his friendly staff will welcome you and go over the surgical plan once more in case of any last-minute questions and/or concerns. The procedure can be performed in the office under local anesthesia with or without sedation. Some patients prefer general anesthesia.
Once you are comfortable, your mouth will be opened at a comfortable level and your cheek will be gently pulled back to access the buccal fat. Dr. Dedhia will make a very small incision inside the cheek to identify the buccal fat pad. He will then gently extract the buccal fat pad, before sealing the incision with dissolvable stitches.
This procedure should take under one hour.

Dr. Dedhia will monitor you in our recovery room after your surgery until the sedation wears off. You are encouraged to have a friend or relative provide you with a ride home as you may still be under the influence of sedation.
Minor swelling and bruising are to be expected in addition to mild pain and soreness but it should subside in a few days. Pain medication can be prescribed and ice packs will help with swelling and discomfort. During recovery, it’s important to be careful not to bite down on the cheek area, so the incision can properly heal and the stitches can dissolve.
Your cheeks will appear slightly fuller during the first week due to swelling but will eventually subside for a more “normal” appearance. You can expect to see your initial results within four to six weeks, and the final results in four to six months.
